What An Incredible Inspiration-Dr. Clarice Graham Carter!
On Saturday Night, I had the privilege of attending the Diggs-Latham Reunion for those students who were taught by Clarice Graham Carter at both Diggs Elementary and Latham Elementary since 1955. It was held at the Embassy Suites. It was an honor to hear this educator speak of all of the promise our students have. She talked of the impact that teachers can have on their students if they believe in them, challenge them and make instruction fun, no matter how difficult the subject matter. Her former students included principals, teachers, lawyers, bankers, government officials and more. Most came from the areas around Happy Hill. I learned about how the first gifted program for black children came about and flourished. Little children rode city buses across town to their classes. I also had the pleasure of Meeting Miss Diggs-Banks. Her grandfather is the namesake of our school and I believe she has come to visit Diggs several times. We will be awarded money to buy a bench that will be placed in our school for the sole purpose of helping a child to realize how many positive traits they have. They will sit with a mentor, teacher, administrator, and guidance counselor or volunteer who will help our kids realize how wonderful they are regardless of their challenges. As teachers, you will never know how your kind words, encouragement and love will impact your children. You have such an important job. Thanks for caring so very much about our kids.
